Problem Description:
How to setup the printer and port for using DHCP?
Solution / Work-around / Answer:
This example is made with the Magicolor 3100 printer.
If a DHCP server is running on customer site and DHCP is enabled by default, the printer will get an IP
Address assigned by the DHCP server.
The Magicolor 3100 printer has a logical name and this logical name can be used for:
- Name in port monitor or standard TCP/IP port instead of the IP Address.
- Telnet
- Ping
- Etc.
If the name in the DHCP server is correct, this name will also be ported to WinS. WinS is responsible for the
usage of logical names for printing, telnet, ping usage.
DHCP will release the leases every x days (this can be setup by the administrator). If the printer gets a new
IP Address, for whatever reason, you have to change your whole port setup on the work stations because
the port monitor or standard TCP/IP port can not be routed to a WinS name.
If the printer could route to a WinS name, it does not matter which IP Address the printer will get because
WinS will arrange the naming – IP Address convention.
